zamus: unlimited – a creative medley of Early Music Events in Cologne

Unlimited possibilities – or, what do you dream about?

This special series of Early Music events was initiated in 2017 and serves to illustrate the imaginative scope of  styles, projects and interests epitomised by zamus musicians.

The series provides  a forum for members and ensembles to express their rich diversity by means of innovative and scientific projects. An expansion of Cologne’s cultural activities, it fosters artistic excellence throughout the region, underscoring zamus’ ongoing visibility as an events organiser throughout the year.

We create openings to welcome new listeners of Early Music whilst continuing to devise contributions for core audiences who might hope to experience Early Music in innovative formats or novel locations. Concern for imaginative interaction with our audiences leads to the creation of unconventional listening experiences.

zamus unlimited expressly embraces cooperation and collaboration with other musical domains and art forms: a baroque poetry slam to celebrate Barbara Strozzi’s 400th birthday, a live music-radio play, fascinating conversations between musicians and instrument-makers. Zamus unlimited is a good way to discover new things about Early Music and it is full of surprising experiences.

Join us on this innovative and exceptional path!

The Cologne Early Music Festival

The Cologne Early Music Festivalhas become iconic in the Cologne music scene.

Every year in the spring between between March and May the Cologne Early Music Festival provides a meeting place for artists from all over the world to enter into dialogue with Cologne audiences in an exceptional programme of international events.

The formats range from enacted music performances to conversation concerts, children’s events and improvisation sessions, variously featuring young soloists and ensembles to top-class stars. For the duration of  a week Cologne acts as a centre for creative encounters and artistic dialogue.

The festival takes advantage of the manifold locations available in Cologne, which are as unique as they are diverse, including the Cathedral, WDR Radio Concert Hall, small theatres, museums, cafés and the Planetarium. Venues like these enable an interactive exchange with audience members, giving them the opportunity to contribute to the artistic experience in innovative ways.

An amazing atmosphere, great discoveries, passionate discussions, congenial exchanges with the artists: the Early Music Festival is zamus’ poster child, reflecting the Early Music scene’s abundance and diversity, generating creative spaces and addressing topical themes.

Zamus and its festival have set themselves the task of becoming a platform for mutual exchange amongst musicians, artists, and audiences. This is as much a forte as a challenge, uniting  German with international musicians and bringing together historically informed specialists of all genres from medieval to contemporary music.

The Cologne Early Music Festival 2020 will take place from 21st – 29th March and celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Further education programs for members and professional musicians

Getting to grips with recent developments such as growing competition and a proliferation of international institutions is a challenge for ensembles and artists alike.

zamus has recourse to extensive knowledge in all areas of Early Music performance and wishes to pass this on.

Musicians can sign up for our music management workshops and further education courses to obtain specific and relevant information. zamus intends to offer full support by sharing resources and information which is tailored specifically to their requirements.

Interdisciplinary seminars and workshops for musicians are offered on a regular basis.

zamus: musiklabor (zamus: music lab)

zamus’ scientific discussion series

Scientific renewal lies at the heart of historically informed performance (performance informed by a considered appraisal of conditions at the time the music was written), and has done since the beginning of the movement. By means of publications such as books and articles, and regular events such as seminars and conferences organised by important Early Music centres, the scholarly world has generated revolutionary trends in numerous areas: for instance regarding questions about fingering techniques, instrument making, sources, performance locations or repertoire. Questioning accepted parameters has revealed new possibilities and opened up creative spaces.

zamus supports these developments with its “music lab” for researchers. The music lab affords scholars the possibility of implementing outstanding research projects, investigating current Early Music topics and connecting with others from an excellent international community.

Between October and June zamus offers a public discussion forum to present these projects, and the opportunity to publish results or the option to invite interesting guest musicologists are also part of the music lab format.

zamus hopes to establish its music lab as a platform for connecting German research endeavours in Early Music and publishing the results. In the sense of a laboratory, zamus considers its music lab to offer a forum between theory and practice for developing new incentives.

zamus: family

Four times a year we open our doors to children and their families: our zamus family concerts are designed for the youngest audiences – no one needs to worry about sitting still!

We believe no one is too young to be introduced to the sounds and sights of Early Music and wish to offer this to the youngest of audiences.

The concerts take place on Sundays at 11 am in the Early Music Centre, Cologne Ehrenfeld, and last 45 minutes – in a cosy atmosphere and with popcorn afterwards. An adventure for the whole family!
